Social media is a great platform, which you can utilize to your advantage in a lot of ways. However, if you are not careful, it may also be the source of your worst nightmares.   Remember that whatever you say or show on social media has the ability to reach millions of other online users, given the virtual web which connects each medium to another. It can make or break, so it will be best if you are aware of how to handle the potentially bad situations.  Here are a few of the things you must be wary of on social media.  You begin noticing a lot of fans "unliking" your Facebook page. This could be the result of a variety of reasons. You may have a promotion online which was the only reason why they "liked" you. In this case, the dwindling number is understandable. When you post relevant information but get back links to other business pages as comments, then this is a clear sign that what you thought was relevant was not really important to your market. Try mixing it up - post blogs, links, use enticing photos and witty posts. Boost your social media presence also by commenting on other pages, sharing others' links or joining online discussions.  You get a lot of negative comments. Among all the things mentioned in this list, this will be the one you should be wary of. When something is said on social media that will invite question into your integrity, then you must be able to nip the rumour in the bud. If colleagues, clients and the public assume that you are less than honest with your dealings or doing something illegal, before responding, listen, examine then fix. It may be a simple misunderstanding, which can easily be fixed, BUT, you must fix it, lest it will blow out of proportion and your reputation will be tarnished in the eyes of others.  You argue with customers and fans when they leave negative feedback. When you are defensive, rude or outright disrespectful and insulting, your other fans will surely see it, read or hear about it in the social media circle.   A damaging video about you, your business or some inappropriate event in your business goes viral. It can happen to anyone - someone deliberately catches on tape your waiter swearing the moment he turns his back on an irate diner, or someone discovers that you scream at your employees like animals when you thought no one is looking. These are really damaging scenarios backed up with evidence, which you cannot deny. The more disturbing thing is, these videos and photos go viral at an alarming rate - too fast that you are bound to lose everything you worked hard for in such a short period of time. There will be no solution from us on how to address or solve this. The best way to prevent this is by always being conscious and making believe that everything you do could possibly be caught on film - it's your only way to self-check yourself, and to ensure that you are at your best all hours of the day.  Social media is a powerful tool. Don't underestimate it; don't undermine it. An ounce of prevention is always better than a pound of cure.
